A low loader: the low deck machines drive onto

In Moldova, “tral” often means a tow truck for cars as well. Ours is something else: a long deck sitting just above the road, with ramps at the back, built for heavy construction machines.

A tow truck winches a broken-down car onto its bed. A tracked excavator cannot take the main road under its own power, and a roller travels at walking pace. On a low loader, both move at the speed of a lorry.

Tell us the make and model and we say straight away whether your machine fits on the deck. Mention any attachments travelling with it too: a second bucket, a breaker, a blade.

How a machine drives on and off

Loading comes down to two things: where the low loader stands and who drives the machine up the ramps.

  1. The spot

The low loader parks on tarmac or firm ground, level, with no slope towards the back. Behind it you need a few clear metres for the ramps and for the machine coming up to them.

  2. Going up

The ramps come down to the ground and the machine climbs them slowly and straight, bucket held just clear. Someone stands beside it and checks that the tracks or wheels stay centred on the ramps.

  3. Chaining down

On the deck, the bucket and arm are lowered and the machine is chained to the trailer’s lashing points, so it cannot shift under braking or on bends.

  4. At the other end

Chains off, ramps down again, and the machine drives off ready to start work right there.

Our own machines are driven on by our operator. Who drives yours up the ramps we agree when you call; it helps if the person who works it every day is there for loading and unloading.

The trips a low loader is called for

These are a low loader’s usual trips. Yours is probably close to one of them.

  • Site to site

The house pit is done and the excavator is wanted in another village for a trench. The low loader collects it from the first plot and takes it straight to the second.

  • A machine you bought

Bought a backhoe loader or a tractor from someone in another district? The low loader picks it up at the seller’s and unloads it in your yard.

  • To the workshop and back

A machine that runs but needs servicing rides to the workshop, and after the repair it goes back home or straight to the site.

  • For the winter

In autumn, when building stops, machines come off the sites to the yard where they wait for spring. In spring the same trip runs the other way.

  • With our machine

If you need the work done, not just the transport, the low loader brings our backhoe loader, excavator or roller, each with its operator.

Every Chișinău sector, every district of the country

For a long trip we agree the day and the departure time in advance, with the people at both ends.

In Chișinău
Botanica, Buiucani, Centru, Ciocana, Râșcani.
Across Moldova
We go north to Ocnița and Dondușeni, south-east to Căinari and right down to Giurgiulești at the southern tip. A machine can travel from one district to another without passing through Chișinău.

Low loader services: questions before the trip

What do low loader services cost?

You get the sum on your first call, and it depends on three things: the machine, where it is loaded and where it comes off. Give us the make and the two places and you have the price before you hang up.

Which machines fit on the low loader?

Standard construction machines: excavators, backhoe loaders, rollers, skid steers and tractors. For a particular machine, tell us the make and model and we confirm straight away whether we can take it.

How is a low loader different from a tow truck?

A tow truck has a high bed and winches a car onto it. A low loader has a low deck and long ramps, and a heavy machine drives up them on its own tracks or wheels.

Do I need to be there for loading?

Ideally someone who knows the machine is at both ends: where it goes on and where it comes off. At the destination, the same person shows where it should stop.

Will tracks damage the tarmac when unloading?

Rubber tracks cross tarmac almost without a mark. Steel ones can scratch new paving or fresh tarmac, so mention it beforehand and we pick a spot to unload on bare ground or an old road.

Can I hire the low loader just for transport?

Yes, with our driver: the low loader carries your machine, and your own people work it on site.

How far does the low loader go?

To any district in the country, and for a long trip we fix the day in advance. What matters most is the last few metres: a steep driveway, a culvert over a ditch or a hump on a dirt track can catch a low deck.

What needs doing before the low loader comes?

Start the machine and warm it up, give the keys to whoever will drive it, knock the caked soil off the bucket and gather the attachments beside it. Keep the space behind the low loader clear of parked cars.

A machine to move? Call and we plan the trip.

Tell us what the machine is, where it stands now and where it has to go. The rest, from the loading time to the spot where it comes off, we work out together.
